Rosalie Gamache, Autoportrait

In my painting practice, I update classic processes in a conceptual approach by revisiting subjects such as portraiture or still life. My work offers a reflection on the subjectivity of interpretation inherent in realistic representation. Respecting the ancient techniques with which I make my works in oil places my creative process in a slow temporality and invites me to reflect on this medium rich of symbolism. This is how I try to establish a dialogue between the historical background of this discipline and its contemporary form.

 

I explore the possibilities of the pictorial medium by bringing together within the same image different representational processes, figurative and abstract. This desire for conciliation seeks to create the bursting of the aesthetic, symbolic and conceptual boundaries of painting. The ambiguity engendered by these associations gives birth to works whose visual offers the resistance of reading and allows a freedom of interpretation. The transition between the mastered technical rendering and the drifts I operate seeks to create confusing propositions. It is in a subtle tension between realism, recognizability and reconstruction that I address the themes of identity, incarnation, representation and gender.

Born in Montreal, I moved to Quebec City in 2014 to pursue a bachelor's degree in visual and media arts at Laval University after studying drawing and academic painting at the Russian Academy of Art in Florence. Since then, in addition to my current art work, I have been teaching drawing at the Académie des Beaux-Arts de Québec, and I offer my services as a street portraitist during the summer in Old Quebec.
